Brazilian superfruit hits the UK

An importer is hoping to introduce the UK to a new super fruit from Brazil.

Sublime Food, based in Kent, is hoping to drum up interest for the Açaí, a berry which US pundits have described as the Amazon’s Viagra.

Ronan O’Meara, from Sublime, said: “The fruit has 30 times the levels of anti-oxidants as blueberries, which are considered a superfruit. It also contains very high levels of omega six and nine oils.”

He said it also has more iron than any other botanical source.

Sublime Food is bringing the fruit over in frozen pulped form, as O’Meara said it has only a very short shelf life of around 12 hours.

“We’re selling the product to some smoothie makers in Brighton and we’ve been talking to a number of companies, both in retail and in foodservice,” he said.

Up until now, the fruit has only been available in limited numbers and mainly for the ex-pat Brazilian market, he added.

It has already proven a big hit in the US market, with chat show queen Oprah listing it as one of her own “Top 10 Super Foods”.

The Açaí is described as having a unique taste, with a hint of grape.
