The Brazilian Foreign Ministry has vowed it will challenge the US decision to impose tariffs on its $158m orange juice import business.
The US government’s decision to impose duties of up to 60 per cent comes after a preliminary allegation that Brazil is ‘dumping’ their orange juice on the US market.
Brazilian officials have rebuffed the claim saying that they are competitive enough without such practices.
They said the tariffs will make exporting orange juice to the US unfeasible and will have serious consequences for Brazilian orange farmers.
Brazil’s government and its orange juice exporters will analyse the US’ decision and send the US Commerce Department its argument by the end of the month.
