Cabbage bouquets are proving popular with shoppers, according to Tesco.
The retailer said that after switching sunflowers for brassica on one of its most popular seasonal bouquets, sales rocketed by nearly 150 per cent. Tesco started trialling the brassica bouquets in several of its stores two years ago and, after positive customer feedback, it now sells them nationwide.
“Brassica bouquets are the biggest new trend in cut flowers right now and they are creating an extra income for the UK’s brassica growers who have now found a new market for their produce,” said Tesco flower buyer Hazel Alexander.
Tesco currently sells two brassica bouquets – one with lilies and the other with chrysanthemums - both for £5.
The trend is repeating at the wholesale markets with one of New Covent Garden Flower Market's biggest traders reporting positive sales.
'We sell green and white cabbage bouquets which we get in from Holland and they're proving very popular with customers; the versatile colours make them good on the eyes,' said Dennis Ewards of Dennis Edwards Flowers.
