Potato producer Branston welcomed the first batch of new season Cornish potatoes into south west Tesco stores this week, with Tesco confirming plans to expand the range nationwide.
Locally heralded as the 'start of the summer',Cornwall potatoes, known for their soft fluffy skin finish, traditionally follow the Jersey Royal season making the crop the first new season potatoes available from the UK mainland.
Richard Clark, commercial director at Branston said:“We are pleased to welcome in the new season and weare excited about showcasing our Cornish produce to the Tesco consumer nationwide as we move into a national spread a little later in the season”.
Meanwhile, Tesco fresh produce category manager Andrew Blackett says it is now imperative that the retailer raises awareness of the brand throughout the country.
He concluded: 'Such is the quality of the product we are looking to spread the offer nationwide later this year to raise awareness of Cornish potatoes throughout the country to other regions.
'Our aim as a business is to offer the best in season to our shoppers and I believe that this offer along with others throughout the year truly enhances that commitment.”
