Tesco’s largest potato supplier Branston has appointed an additional buyer specifically to source material from growers on the south coast of England.

The move follows Tesco’s decision to buy a further 40,000 tonnes a year from Branston in 2005, taking its total volumes from the supplier over 180,000t.

"The additional tonnage we need to supply Tesco next year is a big opportunity for growers in Kent, Sussex and Hampshire where we intend to expand our producer base," said Branston’s commercial director Richard Clark.

The new buyer is Hugh Donovan who joins the company from the BEP division of Waldersey Produce in West Sussex where he has worked as sales and marketing manager for six years. Previously, he was with Stemwest Produce in Somerset and has an HND in agriculture from Seale-Hayne College.

"Hugh has extensive knowledge of the potato industry and also knows the area well," said Clark. "He will be planning and procuring material for Tesco and our other customers, and liasing closely with growers to ensure we give them good support and the best possible service."
