Branston Ltd has ploughed a further £1 million into its Abernethy site, to reduce the environmental impact of its Scottish base and create 11 new jobs.

The potato supplier has already invested £2m in the site, which opened in July last year and, overall, the development has increased throughput by more than 300 per cent, with production rising from 25,000 tonnes to 80,000t a year.

The latest round of capital expenditure has installed a state-of-the-art production line and a water treatment system.

The new production line features a Newtec 3015 multi-head weigher, as well as the latest GIC vertical form bagging machine. This will enable the supplier to weigh and package portion-controlled baking potatoes with greater accuracy and increased efficiency.

A new water treatment system has been installed alongside the production line, to ensure that waste water is as clean as possible on disposal.

Eric Ritchie, general manager at Abernethy, said: “With more growers and an increase in demand, Branston is busier than ever before. The investment in Abernethy reflects this and, while we are looking to increase our production, we are also committed to minimising our impact on the environment.”
