Branston brings out local spuds

Dedicated Tesco potato supplier Branston Ltd is marking the start of the Cornish and Pembrokeshire potato seasons with a series of local events in Tesco stores.

Despite a cool start to spring that has delayed harvests by up to 14 days, Branston says crops are looking excellent.

Jo Parish, Branston’s Tesco account director said: “This year saw a slow start to the growing season due to the late spring and prolonged cold weather, but the crop is now looking excellent thanks to the great effort put in by our growers. Cornwall and Pembrokeshire new potatoes are local heroes and we are only too happy to pull out all the stops to ensure they get the recognition and sales they deserve.”

Celebrating the launch of the Cornish crop, Westcountry celebrity chef Chris Tanner demonstrated ways of preparing new potatoes at local Tesco stores in Truro and Helston on May 18, watched by children from Bosvigo and Parc Eglos primary schools.

Tanner then judged the children in a competition to draw their favourite new potato dish or write a poem about new potatoes.

The Welsh Culinary Association will also demonstrate cookery ideas to promote Pembrokeshire potatoes at the Haverfordwest Tesco store on May 25.

Branston expects both crops to have a big presence at Tesco stores in the local growing areas; the company has already delivered consignments of Cornish new potatoes to six local stores, and anticipates full distribution of the Pembrokeshire crop to South Wales later this month. Cornish new potatoes will be distributed as far north as Newcastle.
