Forecasts made in January of a shortfall in Bramley availability are coming to pass.
According to Adrian Barlow, ceo of English Apples & Pears, a continuing rise in the price for apple juice internationally is diverting increased volumes of Bramley to the juicing sector with 1,200 tonnes going to juice in Feburary alone.
“There is therefore every likelihood that there will be shortages of Bramley in June and July this year,” said Barlow.
“The last thing we want is for consumers not to be able to buy fresh Bramley if they want to. The only way this can be avoided is to see an increase in returns to growers for fresh product.”
