Bramley legend steps down

Bramley legend Ian Mitchell is stepping down as chairman of the Bramley Campaign after 16 years in the role.

Set up in 1989, the campaign was constructed as an attempt to protect UK bramley growers’ interests and to raise awareness of the variety’s benefits among consumers.

Mitchell is credited with masterminding a number of initiatives to help put the variety in the public eye. He worked closely with food writers to showcase the versatility and taste of Bramleys in dishes, and also played a pivotal role in the establishment of both the Brammy Awards and Bramley Apple Week, which both brought great exposure to the fruit.

English Apples and Pears chief executive Adrian Barlow will now take on the running of the Bramley Campaign and the Dessert Apple Campaign.

Barlow paid tribute to the ‘outstanding job’ that Mitchell had carried out, calling him a ‘superb ambassador for Bramley’. “Under him, there has been much innovation in the activities undertaken, to maximize sales from new market opportunities whilst developing sales through existing customers,” he said.

Barlow added that it is now key to focus on continuing to widen the appeal of Bramley for home cooking while also taking in the catering, foodservice and manufacturing sectors.
