Bramley lands royal recognition

The great-granddaughter of Henry Merryweather, the first commercial grower of Bramley apples, has received the Worshipful Company of Fruiterers Award for Exceptional Service to the Food Industry from HRH The Princess Royal.

Celia Steven has devoted herself to preserving and promoting the Bramley apple, which celebrates its 200th birthday this year.

She said of the award: "This is a complete surprise, I'm overwhelmed and absolutely thrilled. I am very honoured to be given this award in the Bramley’s bicentenary year. I do all my work for the love of it and I hope it will help preserve the fruit industry.”

To celebrate the bicentenary, HRH The Princess Royal visited the National Trust’s Cotehle Estate in the Tamar Valley in Cornwall, and planted a tree with the assistance of Celia Steven and Alan French, the Master of the Worshipful Company of Fruiterers.
