Bramley apples have received the seal of approval from UK shoppers.

One in two consumers are prepared to pay more for products containing the famous variety, according to research by retail statisticians Taylor Nelson Sofres.

And almost half of those questioned believed products featuring the crop are of better quality of those made with other apples, with 51 per cent saying Bramley has a superior taste to its rivals.

There is also good news for the apple industry as a whole, with over half of the interviewees saying apple puddings were popular in their family.

Delighted with the news, Bramley bosses pointed to the influence of recent publicity exercises.

Bramley Apple Campaign chairman Ian Mitchell said: 'We are delighted at the growing support we receive each year. Last year Bramley Apple Week generated press coverage worth £0.7 million and this year we expect to hit that target and beyond.' But there is still work to do for the campaign – 12 per cent of consumers claim to have never heard of the variety.
