Sales of Bramley apples through supermarkets in the UK since 1 August have risen 12.5 per cent year on year. English Apples & Pears ceo Adrian Barlow said: “The weather is a factor and we usually see sales of Bramley drop when it is hot. But we did have a cool, damp August this year. Also promotional activity on European stonefruit was less strong this year than last.” Barlow also said that the new Bramley crop is likely to be lower than was forecast six weeks ago as fruit has not sized up as much as expected, despite August rainfall.
