Brakes Group has announced a series of major commitments as part of an ambitious Corporate, Social and Environmental Responsibility (CSER) programme titled Protecting Tomorrow Today.

The foodservice supplier has made a series of commitments following a wide-ranging review of its CSER strategy.

Each of the commitments is designed to create measurable drivers which will see Brakes continue to deliver major social and environmental benefits.

The commitments fall into five categories which cover environment, responsible sourcing, health and nutrition, communities and Brakes people.

Each area is underpinned by detailed commitments such as reducing food miles, doubling Marine Stewardship Council products, meeting government health and nutrition targets, delivering one million meal equivalents to vulnerable people and establishing an employee volunteering programme.

James Armitage, Brakes marketing director said: “We have established a robust CSER framework focusing on five strategic drivers to ensure we make a real and sustainable difference.

“We are totally committed to this CSER strategy and implementing these initiatives and plans. Whether driving down food miles, responsible sourcing, or supporting the communities in which we work, our customers can have confidence in Brakes Group to do the right thing.”

He added: “Our progress with regard to environmental issues is particularly striking when taking into consideration the significant growth of our business both organically and through acquisitions over recent years. As the business grows we continue to reduce our energy consumption and through economies of scale and improvements in systems and processes, we limit our fuel and packaging consumption.”
