Greenock-based British Polythene Industries (BPI) won the 2011 Sustainability Award at the Scotland plc Awards last week. Europe’s largest recycler of polythene film and major supplier of platics for horticulture was recognised for its long-term focus on sustainability including projects such as the UK’s first fully closed-loop farm plastics recycling scheme. The judging panel reviewed independent research on each of the candidate companies by the University of Strathclyde before dubbing BPI the winner.

BPI’s chief executive John Langlands said: “We are delighted that our environmental commitment has been recognised. BPI has operated sustainably for over 25 years. Large scale environmental initiatives such as the closed loop recycling scheme are the obvious face of our environmental commitment however this award also acknowledges the many other projects we undertake such as our sponsorship of school recycling project.”
