The BPC handed out potato packs at five major stations across the UK

Thousands of fresh, British baking potatoes were handed out to commuters across the country this week as part of the British Potato Council's (BPC) convenience consumer campaign.

During an intensive week, the BPC encouraged passengers at five major city stations to enjoy a baked potato for lunch. Starting at Paddington station in London, the BPC team then moved to Brighton, Cardiff, Liverpool and Edinburgh. This extensive activity was further supported by commercial radio promotions in each area, reaching approximately 2.4 million consumers.

Several wholesalers and potato merchants helped make the initiative a success by supplying the baked potatoes being handed out in lunchtime packs. The packs included a healthy topping, cooking instructions, a knife and fork and BPC recipe information.

Neil Hodgson, company secretary of nationwide wholesalers S Thorogood and son baking potatoes for the London and Brighton passengers. He said: “This campaign will help growers, retailers and wholesalers. I think it's a good idea and provides a wake-up call to consumers who had forgotten how easy potatoes are to prepare.”

The initiative forms part of a much wider BPC consumer campaign called “Potatoes Everyday, Anyway”. This is being promoted through magazine, newspaper and radio activities.
