The crop protection treater group at the British Potato Council has produced guidelines to prevent costly over-application of granular nematicides and control the increasing threat of PCN faced by potato growers.

BPC research carried out by Harper Adams University College found that 64 per cent of potato land is infested with potato cyst nematodes. Damage caused to the potato industry by the pest is estimated at £50million annually. And worse still, BPC research shows that PCN populations are increasing year on year.

Some 28,000ha are treated with granular nematicides annually. This costs growers some £9million. But warns HAUC's expert on PCN, Pat Haydock that growers may be applying too much at a cost of an extra £34 a hectare. Dr Haydock says focus should be placed on application depth.
