BPC develops benchmarking programme

The BPC is developing a benchmarking programme to help businesses compare costs and remain profitable.

Comparing your own production costs with similar businesses is as critical as knowing them in the first place, according to BPC processing supply chain manager Damian Baker.

Baker, who made his comments at the Seed Industry Event, said many businesses would benefit from completing a benchmarking exercise.

The new programme will be available from next spring and will deal with complicated financial issues.

Baker said: "More businesses need to know the figures generated by the industry's top 25 per cent of producers. This will improve openness, clarity and lead to improved competiveness with overseas imports."

However, Baker did say that benchmarking comes with a warning. He said: "It's not an exact science. Growers shouldn't use the information in isolation to make key business decisions. They must weigh up al the consequences of making significant structural changes."
