Tommy Smith buys his produce from New Spitalfields Market in Leyton, London

Generation Y, we so often hear, will do its shopping online, and will most likely work in tech and IT-related fields.

But one 16-year-old from Suffolk is looking to buck that trend after setting up a fruit and vegetable business from stalls positioned outside his grandmother’s house in Haverhill.

According to the Haverhill Echo, Tommy Smith buys his produce every day from New Spitalfields Market, helped by his dad, as Smith is too young to drive. Smith also buys some of his veg from farmers in The Fens.

Smith started the venture - working seven days a week - after finishing his full-time education.

He told the Echo: “I really enjoy being out in the fresh air on the stall and meeting everyone, it’s good.'

Smith, whose family runs a scrapyard business, added that the idea for a fruit and vegetable stall came from his dad, who suffered a heart attack last year.
