Bown: challenges ahead

Ronald Bown, president of the Chilean Exporters Association, addressed delegates in Cape Town regarding the development of Chile's fresh fruit exporting industry and where the key areas are for southern hemisphere development.

He stated that the big issues vital to Chile's success were economic freedom, natural conditions, institutionality and the market driven economy.

Bown said: “There are low barriers to entry and exit, an open economy ñ with free trade agreements with the US and Europe. There is confidence and stability due to coherent and trustworthy policies.”

Bown also believes success in large part is also due to the country's Good Agricultural Practices, research and development and training programmes.

Bown maintained that the southern hemisphere faces big challenges, but also has big opportunities.

He said: “Extending the natural season of our fruit products does not benefit anyone. More attention needs to be placed on our fruit through promotions and marketing.”
