Leading figures from the UK food industry were invited to London’s Borough Market for a tour and tasting event on Wednesday, to celebrate the return of the market’s wholesalers to the site’s Jubilee Market following its extensive refurbishment.

Market trustee George Nicholson welcomed a 300-strong crowd to the event. “The market has come full circle,” Nicholson, pictured, told freshinfo. “Borough started life as a wholesale market, and then developed into a retail market as well. Today, the retail operation is boosting the wholesale side, and the market has a confident future.”

“We’re all delighted, and none more so than the original fruit and vegetable wholesale traders, who will begin to operate from their refurbished stands after Easter,” said Simone Crofton, chief executive of Borough Market.

One such trader is Andrew Sugarman, who expects to move back into his renovated premises on April 6. “This is a very positive move for the market,” he told freshinfo. “The new infrastructure will certainly help secure a long-term future for Borough.”
