Borough Market to open specialist fresh produce area

Borough Market is set to open a dedicated fresh produce area for the “ingredient-led shopper” when it reopens on its original site in the autumn.

For the past two years construction work by Network Rail, which is working on London’s Crossrail project, has meant a third of the area of the market has been closed, with traders operating from the old wholesale market.

A spokeswoman for Borough Market told FPJ the area affected by the works, 3 Crown Square, was currently being refurbished. The original Victorian roof had been retained and the building was scheduled for completion in October. The market’s produce traders would be relocated to this area to make a dedicated produce section of the market, she said.

The news is a further boost for the market after seven of the ‘Maltby eight’ traders who were evicted last May following a row with trustees of Borough Market, because they were also trading at rival Maltby Street Market, have been allowed to return.

A spokeswoman confirmed that seven had reapplied to become traders at Borough Market and were accepted last November.
