Southwark Council has honoured Borough Market in London with a commemorative blue plaque.

Voted for by the people of the London borough of Southwark, the plaque has been awarded in recognition of more than 25 years of trading at the market.

Boroughs wholesaler’s have occupied their site to the south of Southwark Cathedral since the 18th century although historical records show that traders have been selling their goods on the south side of London Bridge since 1014.

The plaque was unveiled on 2 February. Veronica Ward, Southwark's cabinet member for culture said: "Borough Market is not only part of the borough's long history but a famous landmark in London which sells produce of a very high quality and sets a high standard for food in London. It is wonderful that the market should be recognised in this way"

Later this year, a new chapter in the market’s history will begin, as railway work is due to be completed and the Victorian roof will be returned to Borough.
