Borough Market has been handed a silver award by the World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) for excellence in promoting healthy eating.
The award recognises the work Borough has been doing to encourage a healthier, more balance approach to eating, with the market having put this at the heart of its raison d'etre. In particular, it wants to highlight the pleasures of enjoying good food, as well as using high-quality seasonal ingredients produced using low-intensity methods.
Borough's three-pronged healthy eating strategy includes providing access to a broad range of fresh, seasonal produce and high-quality products, whose provenance is clearly explained; holding free cooking demonstrations, educational programmes and events to encourage home cooks; and promoting the benefits of its healthy eatingphilosophy through magazine articles, web content, social media and public debates.
“Borough Market’s entire operation is built on the belief that for people to eat healthily, they require access to fresh, seasonal ingredients of the highest possible quality, and the knowledge needed to get the best out of them,” said Darren Henaghan, Borough Market’s managing director.
“We work hard to provide both: a careful balance of stalls and shops selling good food, much of which has been grown, reared, caught or made by the people who sell it, supported by a comprehensive programme of education, communication and public engagement, designed to encourage people to make and eat meals that are both nutritious and tasty. To be recognised in this way by our peers at the WUWM is a tribute to the impressive work that is being done by the market’s traders, staff, chefs and contributors to help our customers live healthier, happier lives.”
