The average UK household spends more each week on alcohol to drink at home than it does on fruit and vegetables.

These are the findings of a new survey on the nation’s spending habits, compiled by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The shocking statistics reveal that UK households now spend £5.90 a week on beer, wine and spirits for consumption at home, compared to £5.40 a week on fresh fruit and vegetables.

The ONS survey carried out annually for nearly 50 years, asks almost 7,000 households to track where there money goes on a daily basis. London’s average weekly household budget was £487 a week with Wales footing the list at £335.
