Red Russian Kale

Red Russian Kale

Booths is stocking Red Russian Kale in store this season, following rising sales of kale in the UK.

The north-west retailer is sourcing the product from local farmer Chris Molyneux, from his farm near Ormskirk.

Booths buyer Matthew Bruno said: “Thanks to reports of its superfood status, sales of kale are up 15 per cent at Booths. This new variety is a real spring treat. With Chris being based so locally, customers are guaranteed the freshest produce possible, and kale that retains even more of its nutrients.”

Red Russian Kale has bushy green/purple leaves and a sweet taste. The product has six times more calcium than broccoli and spinach, high levels of antioxidants and vitamins A and K, and contains more vitamin C than oranges. Kale also offers a high level of folate and iron, and lutein and glucosinolates, which may prevent macular degeneration and cancer respectively.

Molyneux said: “Red Russian is the sweetest kale there is, making it a particularly good choice for children and people who find some varieties a little bitter.”

The new line will be available in Booths stores from now until the end of April. A 250g bag costs 99p.
