Booths battles the big boys

North-west supermarket groups Booths posted a 30 per cent increase in profit for last year, up from £6.9 million in the previous 12 months.

Edwin Booth, the fifth-generation family member to run the UK’s remaining independent supermarket group, said its ethical and environmental policies had helped Booths generate a four per cent rise in sales to £243m.

The Preston-based firm recently invested £2m in a more efficient warehouse and distribution network, and the company has completed an environmental audit, according to The Guardian.

Booth attributes the success to the company’s focus on locally sourced foods and what he refers to as the “human touch”.

“That’s one thing all our competitors find it hard to replicate,” he said. “When you go into a Booths store, you feel you belong and there is a sense of community.”
