Spanish tomato giant Bonnysa celebrated the opening of its new tomato grading and packing plant at Mutxamel in Alicante, south-eastern Spain last week.

The new plant represents an investment of euro30million, 30 per cent of which was financed through EU and Spanish government funds. It is one of the largest of its kind in Europe and covers 30,000m2, with the capacity to handle 80 tonnes of fruit an hour and has cold storage facilities for 2,000t. It has incorporated the latest technology including quality and food safety systems.

The plant was opened on April 15 by national and regional ministers of agriculture Miguel Arias Cañete and Mari Angels Ramon-Lin, as well as more than 300 other guests.

Bonnysa boasts 800ha of tomato production under protective structures in Alicante, Murcia, Almeria and Tenerife and grows 100,000 tonnes of the fruit annually, 75 per cent of which is exported to other EU member states including the UK.
