Morrisons’ hunt for a new chief executive appears to be reaching its end this week with the reported appointment of Marc Bolland to head supermarket group.

Bolland, until now with brewing group Heineken, replaces Bob Stott, a long-standing ally of chairman Sir Ken Morrison.

The appointment of Bolland is said to have provoked a further round of strife on the board, with Sir Ken allegedly clashing with senior non-executive director David Jones.

Sir Ken has promised that he will step down as chairman by 2008. But Jones and his boardroom allies are keen that the change should be made much sooner. Headhunters have not yet been appointed to look for a new chairman.
