Ethical exporter Blue Skies has restarted production at its factories as airlines operating in and out of the UK and mainland Europe begin to resume operations.

The eruption of mount Eyjafjallajökull in Iceland last week caused much of European airspace to close down, preventing the exporter from supplying the UK and mainland Europe.

Heathrow airport opened at yesterday at 10pm yesterday after the Civil Aviation Authority agreed that all UK airspace could be opened.

Chairman Anthony Pile said “We have resumed production and are working closely with the airlines to ensure we get back to normal as soon as possible.

"It’s been a very trying to for us and we must sincerely thank all our suppliers, farmers, customers and staff for their resilience, concern and wonderful support. We are now focusing on getting back to 100 per cent supply.”

While Heathrow remains closed in the UK, Dutch airline KLM has resumed most of its long-haul flights and more than half of its European operations today.

Blue Skies’ biggest factory is in Ghana and employs more than 1,500 people, exporting more than 10 tonnes of processed fruit per day. This equates to more than one per cent of Ghana’s total exports and 20 per cent of Ghana’s pineapple exports.
