The Chancellor of Cranfield University, Barbara Young with Blue Skies Founder and chairman, Anthony Pile

The Founder of Blue Skies has received an honorary doctorate from Cranfield University in recognition of his achievement in establishing the award-winning prepared fruit company.

Anthony Pile set-up Blue Skies in 1997 to deliver premium quality prepared fruit products from factories in Ghana, Egypt, South Africa and Brazil.

Pile founded Blue Skies on the principles of ‘equitrade’ whereby the finished product is assembled within the country of origin rather than processed overseas. By doing this the company believes that around 70 per cenet of the value of the finished product remains in the country of origin rather than as little as 15 per cent if it is processed elsewhere.

In 2011 Blue Skies received a Queens Award for Enterprise in the sustainable development category for the second time. The award recognises the company’s contribution to development in Africa and South America by producing fresh-cut fruit and freshly squeezed juice, prepared within the country of origin.

Pile said “I cannot tell you how grateful I am for this unbelievably generous honour bestowed on a very ordinary businessman who is simply pursuing a passion for entrepreneurial adventure in Africa.”
