New Dutch apple variety wins prestigious taste award at International Taste Institute
Bloss – a new apple variety from Dutch grower cooperative FruitMasters – achieved top marks for taste at the renowned International Taste Institute last week.
Scoring an impressive 90.9 per cent, Bloss received the maximum three-star rating – a distinction given only to products that score 90 per cent and above for their taste, aroma, texture and appearance.
The award was announced at Fruit Logistica in Berlin on 5 February in the presence of enthusiastic Bloss growers from FruitMasters and representatives from the variety’s owner, Fresh Forward.
The International Taste Institute jury, comprising over 200 top chefs and sommeliers from prestigious institutions such as Le Guide Michelin, praised Bloss for its perfectly balanced flavour profile, crisp texture and natural appearance. “A fantastic fruit with a unique flavour, wonderful aromas and a refreshing, crunchy bite,” was the judges’ verdict.
But Bloss is more than just delicious, according to FruitMasters. The apple combines the robust genes of SQ159 (brand name Magic Star) and the flavour characteristics of Honeycrisp (known commercially as HoneyCrunch), making it a future-proof superstar for both growers and supply chain partners, says Tim Kievits, brand manager at FruitMasters.
“This award confirms consumer surveys showing that the unique flavour and qualities of Bloss make it a valuable addition to any retailer’s range,” he adds.
Bloss is available exclusively from FruitMasters in the Netherlands and is offered to retail, fresh produce and catering partners, both domestically and internationally.
Dutch-grown Bloss launched in Marks and Spencer UK stores last week (3 February).
