Blackcurrant concentrate prices fall

Global blackcurrant concentrate prices have sunk after a significantly higher harvest.

According to figures from commodity analysts Mintec, severe frosts in early 2011 knocked 30,000 tonnes off the harvest in Poland, the world's largest producer. That sent prices on the Rotterdam index soaring last year.

However a combination of reduced European demand due to the poor summer in the north of the continent, combined with a higher predicted harvest in the EU this year, has brought down prices, Mintec reported.

Blackcurrant concentrate is currently selling for just under €5/kg in Rotterdam, down from a high of almost €9/kg a year ago.
