Black is the new blue

Sainsbury’s is celebrating a ‘berry’ good year for summer fruits, with a massive rise in blackberry sales.

The supermarket says that despite our distinctly un-balmy summer weather, which is usually synonymous with an upsurge in summer fruits, sales have increased by 15 percent throughout its entire soft fruit range compared to this time last year.

However, even compared to the ‘super’ blueberry, blackberries have been the clear winner, with its sales rising by a sizeable 45 percent.

Soft fruit buyer Julien Roberts said: “It seems our customers are determined not to be put off by the bleak summer we’re having. All soft fruits are selling really well despite the sun not shining, in fact on Monday we saw a whopping 50 percent compared to the same date last year. It’s great to see that our customers are still trying to celebrate summer regardless of whether it arrives or not.
