A major new upmarket Asian supermarket is set to open in Birmingham on March 27. Pak Supermarkets will open the 80,000sqft, purpose-built store at Washwood Heath following two years of planning.

Birmingham wholesaler George Perry will be the main supplier for the new outlet’s fruit, vegetable and salad lines. “The supermarket is very much upmarket, looking to get away from the stereotypical Asian corner shop, target younger Asian customers, and bring all races of people in from far and wide,” said George Perry md Mark Tate, a fourth-generation fruit trader at the 139-year-old wholesaler.

The new Pak Supermarket store has been built in a regeneration area, and joint owner Khalid Hussain has won an Asian Entrepeneur of the Year award for the project, which has also created more than 100 new jobs.
