Spain’s most important biotechnology event, BioSpain 2008, is to be held on September 17-19 in Granada.

The organisers are forecasting a doubling of attendees from the show’s last outing, held in Madrid in September 2006, which brought together more than 1,000 visitors of 20 nationalities and more than 40 exhibitors.

The event, to be held in the Granada Congress and Exhibition Centre, is being organised by the Spanish Association of Bioenterpirses (ASEBIO), the Innovation and Development Agency for Andalusia (IDEA), a body belonging to the Andalusia Regional Governmental Department for Innovation, Science and Enterprise, Genoma Spain, the Spanish Society of Biotechnology (SEBIOT), INTERES Invest in Spain and the collaboration of the Granada Health Sciences Technology Park.

Regina Revilla, vice-president of ASEBIO, said: “Five months away from the event, we have a business participation with almost three times the number of biotech exhibitor companies compared with the 2006 edition, a figure that reflects the staunch will of the biotechnology industry to be a power force in the Spanish economy.”

In recent years, biotechnology has become a driving sector in the Spanish economy, as current figures indicate it supports 44,333 jobs and generates 0.6 per vent of the country’s GDP.

BioSpain 2008 will be split into five modules: the scientific congress, the investors’ forum, the partnering event (one-to-one meetings), the trade exhibition and plenary sessions under the slogan ‘Towards a Sustainable Bioeconomy’.
