A new avocado variety is to hit UK shelves to help extend the popular fruit's season.
Gem-Hass will become available from early October, extending the South African supply period by up to four weeks.
Greencell, a UK subsidiary of the global Westfalia Fruit International group, will pack the Gem-Hass avocado fruit destined for the UK market.
With this variety only now coming in to production, there will be a very limited amount of stock available, but with larger volumes in future years anticipated, this variety will become a key player in years to come.
A Westfalia spokesperson, said: 'We are extremely excited to be able to offer this new variety in the UK. Volumes of Gem-Hass will initially be small but, given the importance of extending our seasons in the late season, Gem will become a very important variety in our range of avocados.'
