BGA sets out future plans

The brassica industry is set to follow in the footsteps of carrot and asparagus promotions, says the vice chairman of the Brassica Growers’ Association (BGA).

Alistair Ewan told delegates at this year’s Brassica Growers’ Biennial Conference that the BGA’s intends to “go down the brassica promotional route”.

Talks are in progress with Pam Lloyd of Pam Lloyd associates, who has brought much media coverage to the carrot industry and British asparagus, said Ewan.

“It would be our intention to work with Pam Lloyd, although funding is still to be discussed,” he revealed. “We have a fantastic product in our industry and brassica growers must promote it and improve consumers’ knowledge of them.”

Ewan opened the conference, held on January 9 at Warwick HRI, by warning the industry of the potentially difficult year ahead. He told delegates: “It has been two years since our last conference and since then we have seen two very different and difficult seasons: the hottest and driest, and the wettest and coldest. It has not been consistent. But one thing has been consistent: the low price.

“I have heard that growers have been getting as little as 16p a head for cauliflower; it is not sustainable. Please communicate with each other and act now before it is too late.”
