Georgia Olins presents the new Georgia berry

BerryWorld has unveiled a new early season raspberry variety named after its md’s daughter, Georgia.

The new fruit is a mid-season Floracane variety that be exclusive to BerryWorld growers in Spain and the UK. It has good flavour and is a productive, cohesive berry with good shelf life. It’s season also starts a week ahead of the earliest raspberries grown so far in the UK.

The variety was bred by Harry Swartz at Maryland University in the US. “We have a three-year agreement with the University of Maryland to develop this variety and will be trialing over 80,000 canes,” said BerryWorld Plus director Peter Vinson. “Georgia looks very encouraging and is the first productive variety from our collaboration there but we are confident there will be other marketable varieties to follow.”

Georgia came about as BerryWorld has been looking to grow the berry market generally and meet demand for year round raspberries. “BerryWorld is trialing varieties that can be grown in the UK with a spring crop grown by our suppliers in Spain,” said Olins. “We are very pleased with Georgia and believe it will prove successful in the market.”
