The work of the Andalusian agricultural research network, Raea, centres on growing techniques and evaluation of new varieties to reduce the reliance on Camarosa in the Huelva area.

This year three varieties are being tested on three different sites with two different planting dates: Camarosa, Medina and Ventana. Medina has been developed by researchers in Andalusia and Valencia and Ventana is a University of California cultivar.

A further 10 new varieties that have never been planted in the Huelva area are also being trialed including Carisma, Marina and Camino Real.

Plants were transplanted in October last year and results are expected to be announced in June this year once the season has finished.
