Berry Gardens’ new blueberry snacking pots have enjoyed a “positive” start according to chief executive Jacqui Green.
The new blueberry format was introduced to Lidl as a trial in May, featuring four separate portions of blueberries, ideal for lunch boxes and on-the-go snacking, encouraging greater adult and children’s fruit intake.
Blueberry sales have grown by 12.5 per cent in the last year, and are now firmly in the top ten biggest selling fruits in Britain after a rapid rise over the past decade.
Green says the new product is well suited to modern eating habits, with other retailers also showing interest in using the format.
“We have recently introduced a child focussed blueberry pack to one of our key retail customers, with demand for a similar pack elsewhere,” Green said.
“The pack reflects the fun element children are attracted to, whilst meeting parents convenience needs – each pot delivers more than a child’s portion of fruit a day.
“Blueberries are a relatively new product to be grown in the UK and over the next few years we will be highlighting the British provenance to the public.”
Berry Gardens will review the trial in Autumn, but Green suggests feedback form the trial has so far “exceeded our original predictions”.
“The pack is tapping into the healthy convenience trend – helping parents put healthy snacks into children’s lunchboxes and generally on the go snacking. The pack is part of the Fun Size range Lidl has been trialling across fresh produce.
Each blueberry pot is equal to one service of an adults five a day,” Green added.
