Bentley motors into Booths

Specialist salads supplier WS Bentley has expanded its And Sow On brand to feature in Booths stores.

The West Yorkshire grower is supplying three lines into all but the smallest of Booths stores in the north of England. The sprouting seeds range was so popular in one store that the entire first consignment sold out on its first day on shelf on January 16.

The new range - Alfalfa, Alfalfa and Leek, and Mixed Beans - is stocked in the chilled salad area of the food store. Nurtured and grown for maximum freshness, the packs are on the shelves within 48 hours of harvesting whilst they are still growing, capturing all taste and goodness.

Booths buyer Hannah Wareing said: “Booths is always on the lookout for good quality products which are from the regions in which we trade. The And Sow On range is a really versatile product and is already proving popular with our customers.”

Jan Bentley, md at WS Bentley launched the And Sow On brand just over a year ago for the firm’s sprouting seeds, beans and leaves to complement the company’s “bread-and-butter” business of own-label salad cress in some of the major multiples. He said: “Dealing with such a unique product one of the biggest challenges for consumers is what to do with it. With our own brand we can explain that on the packaging and it gives us the flexibility to alter our message when want to. With supermarket own-labels, there are so many people that would have to sign off on changes, it would mean we couldn’t be as dynamic.”

And Sow On has been Yorkshire Waitrose stores and Northern Spar outlets as well as selected Co-op stores.

The next move for the brand is to introduce Alfalfa Radish and Sprouting Peas later on this year.

WS Bentley won Best Grower in the 2008 Yorkshire Post Taste Yorkshire Awards and took the innovation category at the Regional Food Group's Deliciouslyorkshire Awards. It also has a Guild of Fine Foods Gold Star won during the summer of 2008.
