Herbs and vegetables from Bengal are being exported to Europe for the first time following a promotional campaign.

The state is now supplying Norway with 26 varieties of herbs and vegetables including brahmi, methi and spinach, kidney beans, and several varieties of gourd, for culinary use.

The move follows campaigning from an NGO called Endeavour, who received backing from the Indian government’s horticultural department.

Endeavour helped secure the new market by assuring a quality, steady supply from 15 self-employed groups of ten Bengali growers.

''We have organised regular training for farmers for maintaining quality and standard and using organic fertilisers,'' an Endeavour spokesman said.
