The Wholesale Fruit and Potato Trades Benevolent Society, formed after the second World War by representatives of companies in Covent Garden, Spitalfields and Brentford Market (now Western International), is actively looking for claimants across the UK.

The initial aim of the society was to provide help and financial assistance to London markets' salesmen who hit hard times after retirement. The remit has changed, to include any member of staff associated with the wholesale fruit and vegetable industry throughout the UK, whether retired or currently employed.

“It is not designed necessarily for people who are destitute, but perhaps just experiencing some temporary difficulties,” said chairman Keith Sims after the society’s recent annual general meeting at JO Sims Borough market office.

Other than Sims, the trustees of the society are: Tony Beeson, George Bray, Bernard Davies, treasurer Jim Varley and honorary secretary Jim Heppel
