This season’s new crop of Conference pears will make Belgium the second biggest producer in the 25 member states of the European Union.
According to estimates by Prognosfruit, Belgian production this year will be 188,000 tonnes, putting it in second place behind Spain (195,000t) and ahead of the Netherlands (155,000 tonnes).
Conference pears grown in Belgium are elongated, offering the traditional pear shape.
