Belana breaks 100 day record in early harvest

East Anglian vegetable marketer Fenmarc has reported its earliest ever harvest for exclusive potato variety Belana.

The earliest liftings have been produced in fewer than 100 days in what is the third season for Fenmarc with the product. “We are delighted with this early season crop, especially with it setting a record start date and its consistent performance week on week,” said Mark Taylor, agricultural director at Fenmarc.

Belana also has good storage capability which means Taylor and his team have been able to extend the season.

“At the moment demand outstrips production, but we have the opportunity now to move further afield and expand our volumes based on excellent results and great customer feedback,” he said.

Belana has a high stem count in production and is therefore able to grow a large number of tubers. It is characterised by bright yellow skin and smooth yellow flesh. It can be eaten directly from the field as a new potato or later as a set-skin variety.

Fenmarc reported being particularly pleased with storage quality as the product goes into store in September, with the last samples coming out this week making availability a full 12

months. The company’s Nigel Allam said: “Belana has good all-round agronomic qualities too and on the back of this has become a firm favourite with growers."
