Seed breeder Bejo is participating at the world organic trade fair BioFach to highlight its involvement in the organic sector.

Bejo is offering certified organic seed of over 120 varieties throughout the coming year and during BioFach Bejo specialists will be explaining how these varieties perfectly meet the current consumer demands such as health, flavour and convenience.

Fred van de Crommert, coordinator of the organic seed programme at Bejo Zaden “Bejo’s involvement in the organic sector is a long term commitment. A commitment we wish to underline by attending BioFach. Increasing numbers of growers are choosing to use organic seed. Awareness is growing that a closed organic chain from seed to plate creates a greater distinctive value compared to conventional vegetable production.”

According to van de Crommert the choice for Denmark as ‘country of the year’ at the BioFach makes sense. “Denmark is ahead of other European countries in developing ‘seed to plate’ concepts with organic vegetables. For the sales of our organic seeds Denmark is a major market.”

The range of organically produced varieties is broad and contains varieties that perfectly fit with consumer demands such as health, flavour and convenience. Van de Crommert said: “Organic vegetables enjoy an image as healthy and flavoursome. It's therefore especially important for the organic food chain to continue to uphold this image. An essential aspect is a range of vegetable varieties with the right genetic characteristics.

“So it's not purely a coincidence that our range contains many carrot varieties with excellent flavours. We will be explaining more during BioFach.”

Bejo Zaden is a specialist in breeding, production and sales of outdoor vegetable seeds. Its seed range is sold worldwide from its head office in Warmenhuizen, the Netherlands and via a network of more than 20 international branches.

Bejo sees a bright future for the organic sector, particularly in West Europe and the USA. “The financial crisis may result in a slight decrease of organic vegetable sales in the short term, but it will not stop the long term trend of steady growth”, said Van de Crommert.

Biofach takes place in Nuremberg Germany from 19-22 February.
