Beetroot on the march

Beetroot, newly-crowned as a fresh produce superfood, is continuing its popular run, with volume sales up 12.2 per cent, according to thinkvegetables.co.uk.

The bright purple vegetable has seen its popularity soar in recent months as more and more consumers cotton on to its health-giving properties. Beets are full of antioxidants, with anti-carcinogens that help to fight cancer.

The leafy part of beetroot is also growing in popularity thanks to their inclusion in recipes by celebrity chefs. This part also contains some super benefits, such as beta-carotene, iron and vitamin C.

According to G’s Marketing, sales of beetroot are increasingly significant in the vegetable category. The company selects, washes and cooks the vegetable at its site in East Anglia and says its health benefits have enjoyed greater awareness thanks to such schemes as 5 A DAY.

“G’s has experienced a marked increase in beetroot sales. This resurgence is the result of consumers, particularly younger women, re-appraising beetroot, particularly freshly cooked formats, which are gaining in popularity, compared with the pickled jar product they have grown up with,” a spokesman for the company said.

“Just last week, we sampled our gourmet seasonal lime recipe beetroot at the Henley Regatta, in place of the traditionally served strawberry, where it was very well received.”
