The British Carrot Growers Association is cranking up its drive to help defeat obesity in the young and promote a healthy diet.

"We take this commitment seriously,” says chairman Martin Evans. “We need to encourage tomorrow's carrot consumers - our nation's children - in ways that communicate directly with them. This means engaging at their level and make healthy eating fun.”

It is supporting three initiatives by introducing ‘Captain Carrot … Field Agent’ - a touring production from actor/director Simon Bamford. This tells the story of a reluctant superhero and his band of friendly vegetables as they battle the evil Baron Von Burger and his army of Noxious Nuggets.

The children are ‘edu-tained’ through theatre, games, puppetry, music and magical illusions to attain a knowledge and understanding of the characteristics of fruit, vegetables and junk food as well as gaining an understanding of where food comes from and how it is grown.

The bespoke puppets have been specially created by marionette masters Presto Puppets, and are voiced by a cast of professional actors and brought to life with digital sound technology. Magic tricks and illusions have been flown in from the the USA, and there is newly-created music.

A new carrot web site dedicated solely to children (www.carrots4kids.co.uk) is being launched this week in support.

To accompany the show and site launch are a host of newly-created, delicious, nutritious and easy-to-cook family recipes created by TV’s Flying Chef Rachel Green on www. carrots4press.co.uk.

Future plans are also afoot which will include the first ever Carrot Fiesta at Doddington Hall, Lincoln in October. There will also be free carrot sampling around the UK at shopping centres from the ‘Carro’ Van’.
