Farm Africa Trek

Barfoots managing director Julian Marks was one of 12 senior food industry figures to complete an African charity trek that has helped raise almost half a million pounds.

The team competed a 150km trek through the wild landscape of the Great Rift Valley in the Tanzania Highlands, a six-day mission that saw them cross low arid woodlands, sodium lakes and grass plains, and scale mountains and volcanic craters.

The tour contributed to the £428,000 raised by the Food for Good initative for Farm Africa this year. Joining Marks on the trip were, among others, Pick n Pay CEO Richard Brasher, Aldi buying MD Tony Baines, Steve Ellwood of AH Worth and EFFP, M&S head of agriculture Steve McLean, Booker commercial director Andrew Thompson and Waitrose commercial director Mark Williamson.

Marks said: 'The challenge was extremely difficult from start to finilsh and saw the team exposed to some of the toughest conditions I have ever witnessed including those from last year's challenge at Kilimanjaro.

'Reaching the end was a great relief, but more importantly the money raised will make a life-changing contribution to so many lives across Africa. This thought alone kept the team going throughout.'
