Pink Lady is Barbie's favourite apple

Pink Lady Barbie Doll apple packs are selling like hot cakes, according to Tesco.

The Barbie apple campaign, launched to persuade young girls to eat healthily, has lead to a 300 per cent rise in sales of the apple since it began six weeks ago.

Tesco fresh produce category director Steve Murrells said: "Children seem to have a natural radar which enables them to detect and reject healthy foods. We're trying to provide parents with the tools to persuade children to eat healthy food by associating fruit and vegetables with popular toys, such as Barbie."

Tesco is now searching for a suitable role model for boys. Murrells added: "There doesn't seem to be a single toy or icon which appeals universally to young boys at the moment. Soccer seems to be the most common held interest, so we'll most likely concentrate our efforts in this direction."

Trials of Beckham Bananas and Action Man Oranges are being considered.
